Cosatu hands over memorandum to council

This comes after a call by Cosatu for a one-day national stay away over better working conditions and pay

Members of different unions under the banner of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) marched during the international decent day of action held nationally.

This comes after a call by Cosatu for a one-day national stay away over better working conditions and pay.

Locally the march started at King George Park and the workers marched to the municipality to hand over a memorandum of demands.

The march was held on Thursday, October 7.

After that, the workers proceeded to Eskom to hand over another memorandum.

The workers stated that they have been trying to have a meeting with the eMalahleni executive mayor and she did not avail herself on many occasions.

They also said the listed demands must be resolved amicably and urgently.

Among their demands are that municipality workers want free serviced stands as well as free houses and all council residence buildings must be given to council employees.

They also said the municipality must do away with outsourcing as they have even exceeded the threshold as stipulated in the act.

They say no to privatisation and that some contractors are doing what the municipality employees are doing, thereby duplicating the work and outsourcing encourages corruption and exploitation of contract workers by getting meagre salaries.

They are also complaining about political interference with the administration.

The workers also demand danger allowance and that Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) must be employed permanently and the process of implementation of the organisation structure must speed up.

Executive Mayor of eMalahleni Cllr Linah Malatjie signing after receiving the memorandum from Cosatu.

“Municipality must stop attacking and undermining collective agreements. Something needs to be done with the dilapidated building as the matter was raised in 2018 and no response was received. Municipality management must stop abusing Section 106 as there was no formal introduction of the section to the union; this was done deliberately so that members can be intimidated. The municipality must consult with labour components regarding the Covid-19 regulations,” stated the demands in the memorandum.

The workers said their demands must be addressed within seven working days.

The memorandum was received by the Executive Mayor of eMalahleni Cllr Linah Malatjie and she was accompanied by Municipal Manager Mr Sizwe Mayisela.
