Arbor program to make eMalahleni green

Tree-planting program will make eMalahleni beautiful and provide clean air

Emalahleni Local Municipality hosted an Arbor Day celebration.

The day was also dedicated to commemorating the lives lost due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The celebration was hosted at the Pretoria Road Memorial Park on Tuesday, September 29.

An unveiling of a cenotaph ceremony was held where respect was paid to the frontline workers who died of Covid-19.

Acting Executive Director for Environment and Waste Management in eMalahleni, Mr Erald Nkabinde.

The day was also dedicated to creating an awareness of tree planting and the importance of Arbor Day.

A tree-planting programme was launched where 5 000 trees will be planted around eMalahleni.

The first few trees were planted at the memorial park and others were planted in Siyanqoba.

The acting Executive Director for Environment and Waste Management in eMalahleni, Mr Erald Nkabinde said that it is important to acknowledge those who lost their lives to the pandemic, but also to commemorate the life of one of the first struggle heroes that were buried at the Memorial Park.

“We are happy to be launching the tree planting program which President Cyril Ramaphosa has encouraged us to do. The program will not only supply us with clean oxygen, but it will also beautify our landscape and enhance our biodiversity,” Nkabinde added.
