A man was nearly hijacked last week while driving in the Central Business District (CBD).
According to the man, who wishes to stay anonymous, he was in his car on Friday, September 24 when he saw the driver of the car behind him acting suspiciously.
Suddenly shots were fired at his car and he accelerated to the police station for his safety. He said he can recall counting about five shots.
In another incident, it is alleged that an unknown man was robbed while hitchhiking on Wednesday, September 22.
It is said that the man was looking for a lift to Nelspruit; a white VW Polo gave him a lift.
Along the way, the driver of the car pulled aside and stopped, then pointed the unknown man with a firearm and took all his belongings including money and some confidential documents.
The unknown man was left in the middle of nowhere.
The police are urging people to stop hiking, especially at night, because they might sometimes not be lucky, but lose their lives because of criminal activities that are happening during hitchhiking.
“The road traffic act does not allow people to hike; therefore we are urging people to stop hiking because it’s wrong. This must serve as a strong warning to the public because hitchhiking is dangerous.People must learn to request an Uber if they want to travel at night and if it’s during the day they should go to the taxi rank and get a taxi there to their destination,” said Captain Eddie Hall.
