Fight back carjacking with Sergeant Ratau’s tips

Four men came out of the car with firearms and demanded his car.

Carjacking reports escalate by the day in eMalahleni, which is worrying to Witbank SAPS as they deal with traumatized victims.

A lot of carjacking cases that are reported usually occur in the afternoon, after sunset.

On September 3, A VW Polo was stolen at OR Tambo Road .

The owner was driving home from work when a White car overtook his car and stopped in front of him.

Four men came out of the car with firearms and demanded his car.

Witbank Police communications officer, Sergeant David Ratau said that such cases are very concerning as people work hard to buy cars, then unfortunately loose them to thieves.

He gave tips for motorists to help combat this form of crime:

  • Motorists should avoid driving in the late evening and night.
  • Doors should be locked and all windows should be closed.
  • Motorists should always be aware of their surroundings. Familiarize yourself with the surroundings areas.
  • When approaching traffic lights and no cars are there, motorists should yield then pass, if the light is red.
  • When there is a car in front of you at the traffic lights, leave a safe distance, in order to turn and drive away, if you are being hijacked.
