Free airtime cost unsuspecting victims hundreds and thousands of rands

Do not let anybody fiddle on your phone.

The community of Emalahleni is warned against a new modus operandi of fraud committed in shopping malls.

Four suspects, three males, and a female pretend to work for cell phone companies and then approach victims in shopping malls with the false promise that they have won airtime which needs to be loaded immediately on their phones.

“The suspects then convince the victims to use their cell phone to load the free airtime. The victims’ banking app is then being used to load the false airtime but the victims’ pin codes are also fraudulently accessed,” Capt Eddie Hall police spokesperson said.

While still happy about the freebie they just landed, the suspects swap the victim’s sim cards and within minutes transfer money out of the unsuspecting victim’s accounts.

The community is warned of this scam and is requested to inform the Witbank SAPS immediately if they are approached by these suspects.

The Witbank SAPS can be contacted on 013 655 5052 or the all-hours crime stop number 0860010111.
