Robberies escalating, police urges public to be vigilant

Police are urging people to be in a group at all times because robbers are taking advantage of them when they’re solo.

Robberies are getting out of control in the city.

Recently, three cases of robbery were opened at Witbank Police Station.

The first case was reported that on Monday, August 9 at 23:53. A woman was on duty with her colleagues when she was attacked by two unknown men at Landau Mine.

Ms Pinky Mbonani said she went to the bathroom to help herself and when she came out, two men approached her and one unknown man pointed her with a firearm.

After being pointed with a firearm, they took her back into the bathroom, and they tied her with a binding cable and took her phone.

The suspects left her alone and helpless in the bathroom.

“I have never been traumatised like this in my life. I’m even emotionally drained, these men have brutally tied me with a binding cable, and they took my phone, fortunately, they didn’t rape or beat me, but what surprises me is that there is a colleague of mine who went to the bathroom before me and they left him. Therefore, I think these unknown men were strictly sent to me, or they wanted me specifically. I think they were sending me a message or something. These guys have made my life a living hell. I just hope that they get caught before this lunatic behaviour escalates even further,” Mbonani told WITBANK NEWS.

Two days after Mbonani was robbed, another case of robbery was opened at Witbank Police Station on Thursday, August 12.

The victim told the police that two African men approached him while he was walking in the park in Mandela Street in the central business district when one of these men pointed him with a firearm.

House robberies accumulating by the day

The suspects allegedly took his wallet that had his identity book, bank cards and some cash and fled the scene.

The victim told the police that he doesn’t know the perpetrators who robbed him, and he can’t even identify them even if he sees them.

Captain Eddie Hall, media communication officer at Witbank Police Station, urges people to walk in groups, especially at the parks, for safety reasons.

Following these incidents of robberies on the same day, Thursday, August 12 another case of robbery was opened at Witbank Police Station and the victim told the police one unknown man approached her and pointed her with a firearm.

He took her laptop and fled the scene. This incident has occurred in Kruger Street.

No arrests have been made so far in any of the above cases.

Captain Hall urges people to not engage with strangers, and they must report any criminal activities that are happening around them.

Capt Hall further pleads to the public to work together with the police in fighting the criminals.
