‘Real men don’t hit’ says TUT students in eMalahleni

On the march male students were dressed up as female and females were dressed as males.

Students of Emalahleni Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) have embarked on a peaceful, funny march in commemorating and celebrating woman’s day as well as raising awareness against gender-based violence (GBV).

The march took place at Corridor Hill TUT students’ residence on August 9.

On the march male students were dressed up as female and females were dressed as males and according to the students, the purpose of cross-dressing was to show solidarity and unity amongst each other.

In the proceedings of the march Miss TUT 2020, Vanessa Pitsi Mdluli told WITBANK NEWS that this time around they wanted to celebrate Women’s Day differently comparing to the previous years.

This time they wanted men to be part of the march because they also form part of their life hiccups or challenges, especially when it comes to GBV.

Therefore they wanted male students to get a feeling of how does it feels to be a girl in a skirt.

“Reason behind the cross-dressing it’s because we wanted our fellow male peer students to get the feeling of what we go through as females. Therefore after today, we hope that our fellow male students are going to protect us against all the negative challenges that we go through as girls. We also hope that this message that we are trying to convey today is going to go viral across the world because we are tired of being victimized or taken for granted” said Vanessa.

Vanessa concluded by urging males in the world to take care and protect women especially in these tragic devastating times where the issue of GBV seems to be escalating in a barbaric manner.
