Offenders at Witbank Correctional Centre have started a bricklaying project as part of the self-sufficiency projects that the management area is embarking on.
According to Mr Thabile Mahlangu, assistant director of communications in the Witbank management area said the first brick was moulded on Monday, July 5 and to date over a thousand bricks have been laid.
Regional Commissioner Mr Thokolo Tlabo applauded the centre for their initiative and indicated that this project will save the department a lot of money whilst ensuring that construction projects progress without delays.
“Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West centre can now transfer skilled offenders from any centre in the region to further such projects by training other offenders in these particular skills,” he stated.
He was accompanied by CDC Incarceration and Corrections Mr Thobakgale Makgothi who commented on the bricklaying process, ‘Witbank is recycling ash from the boilers to make the bricks, this is commendable,’ he said.
Witbank Area Commissioner Reverend Sibanyoni Mandla informed the regional commissioner and delegates that the objective was to begin building a storeroom and an office once adequate bricks have been made.
“We have several projects that we plan to complete with the bricks including an educational facility inside the centre,” the area commissioner alluded.
The team then went to view the timeworn building currently used as a storeroom and office for officials.
The regional commissioner mentioned that management could even improve the design of the structure when construction is done.
Thokolo indicated that he was pleased to see the entire executive participating in the projects.
“We can achieve more when we work together,” he affirmed.
The walkabout continued to the textile factories where the RC and CDC were shown the preparations in place for the production of uniforms for officials.
Both the RC and CDC confirmed that they will continue to support officials who are passionate about the work being done.
