Investigations continue after fight at Technical High School

Two of the learners returned to school today.

Everything was peaceful and quiet at the Technical High School (HTS) as the new week kicked off.

The two learners who were suspended after an altercation at the school earlier this month returned to school on Monday, June 21.

Janu Neveling (16) who was injured in the altercation on June 8 will most probably return to school next week.

Janu’s grandfather Mr Fanie Etsebeth said Janu’s doctor is satisfied with his progress.

Two teachers who were suspended during a high delegation visit that included the MEC for Education Mr Bonakele Majuba, the MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Mr Vusi Shongwe, Nkangala District Executive Mayor Cllr Thembi Masilela and Emalahleni Local Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr Linah Malatjie and the Mpumalanga Premier Ms Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane will know their fate on Friday, June 25.

During their visit on Monday, the Premier spoke to learners and also the teaching staff.

The Premier urged the management of the school to work collaboratively with all key role players to restore order and discipline.

Referring back to the incident on June 14, when two groups clashed outside the school’s gates, the Premier sent a stern warning.

“No one has the authority to barricade the gate of this school under any circumstance. Only the police have the authority to do so, in order to quell violence. Anyone who does so must be identified and be brought to book for violating the policy that governs the school. It is the responsibility of law enforcement agencies to arrest instigators of violence.”

The Premier laid a strong emphasis on children’s rights and said no child should be discriminated against in any school.

She also told the school’s management not to accede to external pressure as this will compromise the safety of learners and the teachers.

Mr Tius Cronje from the school’s governing body said they will together with representatives from the department of education; officially start their investigation into the altercation between the learners on June 28.
