The public is urged to be vigilant of ATM scammers

People are urged to be extra vigilant when they withdraw money at Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).

People are urged to be extra vigilant when they withdraw money at Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).

This comes after an incident that happened on Friday, June 4 where a lady was approached by four men with two ladies pretending to help her to withdraw money using a new method to avoid long queues.

Mrs Buhle Simelani says that these scammers have instructed her to tap her card on the ATM screen and press enter twice followed by her pin so that she could be able to withdraw money; she refused to do that. These men then harshly pressed her to the machine and told her not to move, because if she moves, she will be putting her life in danger.

Simelane added that she tried to call security, only to find out that the security is working with these scammers. She then screamed for help and the scammers ran away along with the security.

Simelane told WITBANK NEWS that she urges people to be extra vigilant when they’re at the ATM withdrawing money and they must refuse to accept any help from strangers.

Following the previous incident of this type, on Friday, May 21 Brigadier Lindani Ndlovu from Vosman Police Station had warned people to be careful when they use ATMs, because there are scammers out there waiting to take advantage of innocent people.

Brig Ndlovu said if someone offers to help you, refuse and cancel the transaction, leave immediately and contact the police emergency telephone number 10 111 to report such criminal activities.
