Cause of Eskom employees death not certain yet

Eskom is still investigating the death of one of its employers.

The cause of a man’s death at Kendal Power Station has not yet been determined.

Mr Julius Mokoena died on Saturday, June 12 at approximately 01:00.

According to Eskom, Mokoena was performing routine plant checks as part of his normal duties.

His colleagues found him after they tried fruitlessly to reach him on the radio and his cell phone.

“The station’s paramedic team responded immediately and regrettably declared him dead on the scene,” was a statement from Eskom.

Police from Ogies Police Station together with the Department of Employment and Labour were informed and SAPS responded to the scene.

Mokoena is survived by four children and one grandchild.

Eskom’s media desk said they have a robust employee assistance programme and support system for employees and their families.

As such, they are ensuring that the family is receiving the necessary assistance during this difficult time.

The Kendal team is deeply saddened by his passing and the incident is currently under investigation.

“Our heartfelt condolences and sympathies go out to his family, friends and colleagues.”

In an unrelated incident on Tuesday, June 8 an electrical artisan, together with an electrical maintenance learner was assigned to attend to electrical defects on a 380V board on one of the units at the station.

“While replacing electrical components the learner sustained burns on both hands. An ambulance was immediately called to the scene and the learner was given the necessary medical care and thereafter transferred to hospital for further treatment.”

An investigation is already underway to determine the root cause of the incident.

The power station general manager called a work stoppage for all employees and contractors to inform them of the incident and reinforce the importance of following safe work practices at all times.

Eskom is in contact with the hospital to track her progress and ensure that she has the necessary care and makes a swift recovery.

In addition, Eskom continues to liaise with her family to ensure that they have the necessary support during this time.

Eskom would like to confirm that its core value of zero harm remains of great importance and focus, to ensure the safety and well-being of all employees and contractors at their sites.
