Businesses in various areas in eMalahleni have been facing robberies in recent weeks.

On May 14, four unknown men walked into Gugulethu Guest House, pretending to be casual clients.

As they were being directed to their rooms, they pulled out firearms and robbed them of their valuables.

It is alleged that they stole a television from one of their rooms and also stole money; the suspects then fled the scene.

A police report was opened and investigation is underway. Other business robbery cases were reported to have happened in Duvha Park, Siyanqoba and Tasbet Park.

Captain Eddie Hall, media spokesperson from Witbank Police Station has advised business owners to follow these preventative measures:

  • Limit the amount of cash held on the premises.
  • A float should be kept to a minimum and stored securely.
  • Cash registers should be positioned in such a way that the cash cannot be seen by customers.
  • Cash should be counted away from customers and stored safely before banking.
  • Shop takings should NEVER be discussed in public.
  • Ensure cash is not left on the premises overnight.
  • Safes should be fitted with time delay locks and secured permanently to the wall or floor.
  • Safe keys and combinations should be stored securely.
  • Consider using a professional cash carrying company to collect cash from the business.
