Ikhaya Athletics Club grows day by day

The club was established last year on April 4, and they have since been registered with the Mpumalanga Athletic Association.

Ikhaya Athletics Club reached a milestone; they recently celebrated their one-year birthday.

The club was established last year on April 4, and they have since been registered with the Mpumalanga Athletic Association.

To celebrate their birthday, they organised a 17km fun run; that is 6km, two 4km and 3km. The runs had four minutes in between breaks.

Founder and club president Nondidwa Mtsweni also celebrated his birthday on the same day. About 25 athletes participated in the fun run.

“We had a great time during the fun run even though some athletes did not finish the whole course. Two athletes showed great potential; Adam Tjatji and Elias Motau. They are very good athletes and I do not have doubts that they will take Mpumalanga and South Africa by storm. Despite the challenges we face last year (2020), we managed to break through as we had training camps twice and a 5km virtual train race plus a 10km and a 5km race on December 16. God kept us free from Covid-19 in that trial year, and we kept all the rules and the regulations,” said Mtsweni.

Mtsweni added to say that the number of athletes joining the club is growing especially athletes from Mloto.

He promised that given two years the club will be among the best clubs in the province.

They’re targeting to have 100 athletes registered and to participate in cross-country events.

“I will give tips on track and field, road running and cross-country in the future to help upcoming athletes. I am trying to build a bright future for our athletes and build the wall of Jerusalem,” added Mtsweni.

The cornerstone of the club is Genesis 1:26.
