Action taken at Klipfontein Dam

Klipfontein Dam once a fine attraction point but now a sore eye for the community.

Do you feel that you want to take your family out to a nice attraction point, have a braai and let the kids run around to play?

Klipfontein Dam was just this type of place an odd 25-30 years ago.

Now it is a lost treasure that is busy deteriorating because people neglect this fine attraction point.

The grass is long and heavy to walk on and the braai areas, benches and dustbins are damaged.

The ground is covered with alcohol cans, bottles and plastic all over.

The dam is green and polluted due to all the rubbish that is floating in the dam.

The dam wall is also leaking because the maintenance on the wall has not been up to standard in a while.

There is also a Put-Put course that is not even playable at the moment.

Community members are sad to see that a dam where they use to play and went to relax is becoming more damaged with time.

The long grass, weak lighting and lack of security measures have also made the dam a crime hotspot during night times.

Moritz Petzold, a community member that used to visit the dam as a child and Naritha Naidu from Action SA is already busy with the first step in restoring what was a beautiful sight.

Moritz is the leading front man in restoring the gem ‒ Klipfontein Dam.

Naritha Naidu is busy cleaning up at Klipfontein Dam.

He already repaired the main incoming water line to the ablution buildings, repaired another water leak and a sewage drain pipe.

Together with his wife, Amelia he also tries to keep the grass short and clean up as much rubble as possible.

“Funds must be available to get this dam in a good state of conservation for the community to have a picnic and a day out and enjoy the beautiful things hidden in our community,” said Moritz during an interview with the WITBANK NEWS.

Naritha and her team have been busy with the ‘clean up campaign in ward 33 for almost seven weeks up to date.

This initiative is to have cleaner communities and give sustainable service delivery.

The dam falls under ward 33 and this is not a private establishment.

Naritha expressed her feelings over the current state of the dam and that how unhygienic it is for all community members.

She also felt that this can once again be a great attraction for all community members if taken care of properly.

Naritha said: “I would like to ask the municipal manager to intervene because it can not be that a beautiful dam like Klipfontein Dam can go unattended. The most painful thing is that this dam is very green, naturally, there is a high level of pollution.”

Residents are welcome to sponsor, support and assist the best way possible to see this dam flourish again.
