Mom feels hospital failed her seven-year-old

Her finger was bandaged and a piece of plastic was underneath the bandage covering the finger.

A mother has mixed emotions as she feels that Witbank Provincial Hospital has failed her, and she feels bad as a mother that this has gone so far.

Ms Ayanda Mhlanga is raising the issue of ignorance and negligence from the hospital’s side.

“The Witbank Provincial Hospital is dismally failing patients,” said Mhlanga.

On Thursday, February 11 a door hit her daughter (7) on the index finger at home.

There was excessive bleeding and the nail moved away from the original position and there was also a deep cut on her finger.

Mhlanga took her daughter straight to the clinic where she was told to take her to Witbank Provincial Hospital.

She was admitted into hospital on that Thursday, by the following Tuesday, February 16 she was discharged from hospital with a report saying it was fractured.

Her finger was bandaged and a piece of plastic was underneath the bandage covering the finger.

“She was sent home with no action taken on the finger,” said Mhlanga.

When she was discharged, she was sent home with pain medication for a broken, bleeding and swollen finger.

“My question is what were we supposed to do with her at home in this situation?” said Mhlanga.

By Thursday, February 18 the wound started going septic and that is when Mhlanga took her daughter back to the hospital to get some answers.

Mhlanga was told that there is no theatre in the hospital as they are busy with renovations.

According to Mhlanga the staff ran around without giving her a proper explanation about what is going to happen.

They decided to redress the septic wound, but once again the woman was shocked as they did not have any dressing equipment.

“It’s a shame that such a huge facility does not have an operating theatre,” said Mhlanga.

Currently, the seven-year-old is still walking around with an open septic wound and is in constant pain.

“My plea is that the right people help with such situations because it’s clear that people are not getting the right treatment due to lack of facilities, lack of medication and ignorant staff members. How many lives must be lost due to this negligence? Until this day she hasn’t been stitched, the wound is exposed and the answer we still get is that she is young, and it’s going to heal on its own instead of them exploring other options,” said Mhlanga.

The complaint was sent to the Mpumalanga Health Department, comment from them is still pending.
