Letter of grievance from the community of Schoongezicht, eMalahleni

Our elected officials seem not to care about the hardships we are facing due to the power losses we are suffering.

We as the community has suffered 3 power outages due to cable theft in one week and 4 in total in two weeks.

Seemingly, it is the same cable that is replaced that gets stolen every time. We are now fed up with this and we demand that all the responsible people from our local municipality and law enforcement to be aware that of our intent to demonstrate peaceful strike against this “pandemic” that we are suffering.

Our elected officials seem not to care about the hardships we are facing due to the power losses we are suffering.

Loss of meat and other perishables that amount to thousands of rand are just being thrown away due to this. We have approached the local municipality and law enforcement about this cable theft and they responded that they are afraid to patrol that specific area because one of their own has lost his life patrolling these hotspots of which is very unethical because the job of the law enforcement is to catch thief’s and risk their lives to protect.

To be honest, we as a community do not feel safe anymore due to this response from law enforcement. If they are scared to patrol these hotspots then what should be done?

We humbly request that an investigation be launched to bring the perpetrators to book and we request all available resources to be used to bring awareness of this so-called pandemic that we have endured and will still endure if nothing is done about it. We also request that all media platforms be used to spread this letter.

From an aggrieved community.
