Vosman SAPS tighten grip on Gender-Based Violence

The other side of the problem is that police put more efforts and resources into the investigation as well as arresting suspects, only to be told that the case has been withdrawn

The Station Commander of Vosman has commended his foot soldiers for a job well done after more than 80 suspects have been arrested in six days.

These arrests took place between November 23 and 28.

Thirty of the suspects were arrested for assault with an intention to cause grievous bodily harm and the others for a variety of offences ranging between common assault, possession of drugs, driving a motor vehicle being under the influence of liquor as well as domestic violence.

“Illegal immigrants were also not spared from the hard work of the police as four of them were arrested. Talking about the assault cases, it has been noticed that liquor played a role and therefore the community is hereby urged not to abuse it because, in the main, Gender-Based Violence incidents are perpetuated by people who have taken liquor,” said Capt Elizabeth Mkaudi, Vosman SAPS spokesperson.

On that note, she said the Station Commander of Vosman, Brigadier Lindani Ndlovu has warned the community to refrain from the excessive use of liquor which at the end of the day, becomes the root cause of most of the assault cases.

“I urge the community to be responsible when drinking liquor and stop drinking more than necessary.”

Most of these suspects have already appeared before Witbank Magistrate’s Court on different days where their cases have been moved to later dates.

“However it also came forth that three assaults and assault GBH cases have been withdrawn by the complainants, a matter which remains a worrying factor,” said Brigadier Ndlovu.

Brigadier Ndlovu further encouraged the community not to withdraw cases because the perpetrators of these crimes will not stop their violent behaviour.

The other side of the problem is that police put more efforts and resources into the investigation as well as arresting suspects, only to be told that the case has been withdrawn.

Police in Vosman will continue working with the community in terms of addressing the scourge of crime in and around Vosman policing precinct.

Brigadier Ndlovu has thanked the community for always availing their services by giving information to the police.
