‘Geduld-brug’ gets some TLC

A stop-and-go will only be used to place the new beams for the widening of the bridge

Construction on OR Tambo Bridge has definitely attracted some attention.

The bridge which carries traffic across the N4 to the other suburbs of the City of Coal will be widened to the east.

This will allow for an additional 3.5m lane travelling southbound over the bridge and a 2.5m wide walkway.

The contractor has already started to construct the substructure for the new widening.

The work on the substructure is planned to start in early November.

This will include the demolition of the existing walkway on the eastern side of the bridge.

The existing interchange ramps will also be upgraded to allow for additional turning lanes.

“The works will only result in reduced lane widths. The scheduled completion date is the end of June 2021,” said Ms Solange Soares, communications manager from Trans African Concessions (Pty) Limited (Trac).

She said the traffic lights will be affected during this period and Trac will be employing pointsmen to assist in alleviating the congestion during peak times.

A stop-and-go will only be used to place the new beams for the widening of the bridge.

This will result in a stop-and-go of one hour and will be done during off-peak hours in order not to have a negative impact on traffic flow.
