Local author pens book to help kiddies with distance learning

Nollan Moosa took it upon himself to write a book stuffed with fun school-related activities to assist learners between the ages of 3 to 8 years in an attempt to help to bridge the gap caused by the current national lockdown, in the institutions of learning.

The 29-year-old author who is also a motivational speaker and a photographer from Schoongezicht, said it was through the help of “some teachers and research” to compile his 132-page-book of content suitable for the targeted learners.

“Things are now on a homeschooling base mostly, I just thought that I could come up with something fun for kids to do whilst at home. Parents are used to sending their kids to crèche and then fetching them after school,” he said adding that he wrote the distance learning book for children so that parents can continue teaching them rather than being indoors playing video games and so forth.

While providing an outline of his book, Nollan said he intends to improve knowledge of the learners as it entails content they are already familiar with as well as activities that complement with their everyday lives.

“For example learning the alphabetical “A” is for apple. Furthermore, in the maths section, we made use of apples to help them with calculating. As for home activities, parents can use actual apples for the kids to practice which letter it represents as well as counting how many apples come in a bag for instance.”

“Kids require the educational nourishment they are missing out in schools,” he said.

Last year Nollan published a book titled: “Sightless” a psychological drama which he said was inspired by the characters’ inability to see what is in front of them despite everything being visibly clear, on March, 31 as previously reported in WITBANK NEWS.

He added by revealing that the inspiration of his books does not come afar, but from “everything happening in the context of the world around us.”

“The books vary, but what they have in common is that I prefer writing about current events, so right now we have a pandemic in our hands changing everything we used to do and having access to; educational institutions have to progress to keep up with everything and that is what this book is about. But for a mere fact that we are dealing with children, we encourage them to have fun whilst learning, so in a nutshell, it may be the same genre with my previous book, but it is in fact based on something I find important.”

Nollan said what he hopes to achieve with his book is to fill the gap left by the current lockdown as parents are also sceptical about the return of kids to schools in the era of COVID-19.

“Hopefully this can provide with the assistance they need with homeschooling,” he explained adding that he aspires to have his book incorporated into the schooling syllabus.

The book was written during the lockdown and co-edited by Nollans’ girlfriend, Kimberly Parker who is a qualified journalist; to get the book, one would have to email nmauthor7@gmail.com with the subject line ‘Distance Learning’.

“I am currently working on my third book, about domestic violence,” he added.
