Nkangala TVET College CEO responds to student protest action

Protests at all the campuses were because of NSFAS allowance issues

Students at Nkangala Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College participated in protest actions for about four weeks in seeking their allowances from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

The college’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Cain Maimela, confirmed to WITBANK NEWS on Wednesday, March 18, that the student protest action indeed regards to NSFAS allowances.

“There are students who did not get their NSFAS allowance and these are students who applied for NSFAS at the beginning of the year. It may not be possible for such students to get their allowance soon after they were accepted for funding from NSFAS,” said Mr Maimela.

He continued; “The students became frustrated that they even forced me to stand in the rain to get their message through. A team was sent to confirm what could be the problem and found that students that are not first-time receivers of NSFAS, mostly used a certain network provider, therefore they couldn’t get their notifications regarding their allowances. There could have been a network problem with the provider.”

Not only students at the eMalahleni campus were protesting, but also Middelburg campus and Mphondozankomo campus.

Protests at all the campuses were because of NSFAS allowance issues.

Some students have received their allowances but some are still waiting.

The college is currently closed due to Covid-19 outbreak therefore students were sent home.
