WATCH: Water crisis could have been avoided

The water supply to Model Park was affected due to a pipe break and repairs were completed, unfortunately, there were additional cracks and further repairs took longer than anticipated

If the municipality implemented a proposed water master plan six years ago eMalahleni would not have a water crisis on hand.

Cllr Moosa Bhamjee from the Democratic Alliance said he gave the municipality a water master plan close to six years ago and if that was implemented everyone would have water all the time.

Cllr Bhamjee said the municipality said on many occasions that 700km of water pipes have to be replaced.

He said the goal to replace all 700km of water pipes can be reached in six years and it is possible if the municipality uses the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), which is one of the key components of the government’s drive to alleviate poverty.

If the EPWP team can dig 300m a day, they will reach 3km in 10 days.

In a year they would have covered 120km and in six years the whole 700km.

“The old and new pipes should run parallel next to one another. When there is a water problem, one can easily switch from the old pipes to the new pipes and vice versa. This will secure constant water supply to the consumer.”

Cllr Bhamjee is however very disappointed in the municipality and said so many residents have offered their skills to the municipality to try and help restore what is left of the once glorious city, but the municipality has not taken up their offer yet.

Member of the Jackaroo Park Ward Committee Ms Michelle Bester let out a sigh of relief after Jackaroo Park residents had water in their taps over the weekend after weeks of water problems in the suburb.

In the same breath, over the weekend more empty taps were experienced in other suburbs.

The water supply to Model Park was affected due to a pipe break and repairs were completed, unfortunately, there were additional cracks and further repairs took longer than anticipated.
