Downtown is a dangerous place as robbers target several businesses

The suspects allegedly asked for money and they took R20 000 from the till

eMalahleni CBD has definitely become the central hub for mischief the past few weeks.

Dozens of businesses downtown are the weekly targets of robbers.

On Friday, February 21 just past 15:00 a shop was robbed and the owner was assaulted.

“Two males walked in acting like they were customers. One of them had a gun with him and he pointed the gun towards me,” explained the shop owner.

Allegedly the suspects also forced the rest of the employees into a corner.

“I was also beaten over the head with the weapon,” the owner further told.

The suspects allegedly asked for money and they took R20 000 from the till.

“I saw the car which they used to get away with. It was a black Ford Fiesta with a GP number plate.”

The registration number of the escape vehicle is YZM 292 GP.

“We’ve had our shop downtown for 21 years and this was the first time that something like this happened to us. It is no longer safe downtown. A few weeks ago a shop close to us also got robbed and someone got shot in the leg,” the shop owner concluded.

A case was opened at the Witbank Police Station and police are investigating the case.
