Video: Arrests for perjury increases

CCTV-footage showed what happened and the friend confessed that he is the one that sold the generator that was reported stolen

Perjury consists in the unlawful and intentional making of a false statement in the course of a judicial proceeding by a person who has taken the oath or made an affirmation before, or who has been admonished by somebody competent to administer or accept the oath, affirmation or admonition.

Perjury can get you in a lot of trouble; even arrested. Perjury is the offence of wilfully telling an untruth or making a misrepresentation under oath.

The following case of perjury allegedly started on January 18, where the victim left his generator in storage by his friend; he was told by his friend that his generator was stolen during the time it was in storage.

It is alleged that in early February further investigation showed that the generator was never stolen, it was sold at a local pawn shop by the friend and then reported stolen, which meant the friend lied under oath.

CCTV-footage showed what happened and the friend confessed that he is the one that sold the generator that was reported stolen.

The friend was arrested for theft.

Captain Eddie Hall from Witbank Police said: “The community is warned that any statement that was given under oath will be investigated and if it is found to be false, that person will be arrested and charged with perjury. Witbank SAPS crime analysis has shown that several false statements are made at the police station for insurance purposes and insurance fraud. Such perpetrators will be criminally charged for perjury and/or fraud”.
