Protesters destroying tuck shops in Vosman

This time around one suspect was arrested for malicious damage to property

Every time there is a protest march in Vosman Ms Sambina Sifundza fear for her family’s safety.

According to Ms Sifundza, every time there is a protest march in Vosman the tuck shop in her yard is a target.

This has not happened once or twice but more than three times now. On Wednesday, November 6 there was a service delivery protest march in Vosman and the residents were protesting after electricity was cut off.

“They always came for the tuck shop in my yard I have rented out to my foreigner tenants. A large group of people came to the yard at about 12 midnight and they started destroying the tuck shop and looting everything inside the shop. They even broke the steel security door and further break the wall of the shop. Some of them came prepared with trolleys and pack groceries in them. They also insulted and threatened us.”

Ms Sifundza said this has happened many times and she always opens cases at the Vosman Police Station.

This time around one suspect was arrested for malicious damage to property.

Ms Sifundza who stays with two of her children says this is traumatising her and the children and always brings memories of her late husband who was killed after being robbed a few years ago.

“I wish they can be arrested so that they know that we have a justice system in this country. I do not know what does protest march has to do with stealing and destroying other people’s property. I rely on the rent paid by my tenants,” added Ms Sifundza.

Another nearby tuck shop occupied by Mr James Fanon was also destroyed and goods looted.

He said they took everything they could lay their hands on. He was left to rebuild the tuck shop as it is his only source of income.

“They break the wall and they beat and insulted me and my brother as they loot my shop. I have also opened a case with the police. This is bad and must come to an end,” explained Mr Fanon.
