They were both declared unfit to possess a firearm

Excellent investigations by SAPS lead to the successful conviction of two robbers.

The case was finalised on November 4 in Witbank Regional Court when Smangaliso Mathebula (26) and Edwin Zitha (27) were sentenced.

They were both found guilty for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Mathebula was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment and Zitha to eight years imprisonment.

They were both declared unfit to possess a firearm.

This conviction follows an incident that happened in September 2015.

The two robbers approached Nombali Louisa Twala (28) while she was waiting at a hiking spot on the eMalahleni and Ogies Road.

One of the suspects pointed a knife at her and demanded cash and cell phone.

Brigadier Leonard Hlathi, provincial spokesperson said Twala screamed for help and the suspects fled the scene into the bushes nearby.

“Meanwhile Witbank Police Station vehicles arrived on the scene and searched for the suspects in the bushes where they manage to arrest both suspects and recover the robbed items.”
