Murder in Van Deventer Street

Police officers on duty were alerted about a possible murder and they made their way over to the scene

An Algerian man lost his life after being shot in Van Deventer Street in (Central Business District (CBD).

On Saturday, October 26 at about 03:00 three Algerian citizen men locked up a local tavern in downtown eMalahleni and started to make their way home after a long day.

The three men were travelling in a white half ton Hyundai truck.

Allegedly the three men were being followed and when they reached Van Deventer Street the suspects forced the men in the Hyundai to pull-over.

The suspects then opened fire with the handguns that they had.

Five bullets flew through the windscreen.

Allegedly the suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash from the three men.

Police officers on duty were alerted about a possible murder and they made their way over to the scene.

Upon arrival the police officers saw that the truck was still idling and that the lights were still on.

The driver door was open and the driver was lying down on his face next to the right front wheel of the truck.

He was shot on the left side of his head and died on scene.

One of the three men had also been shot in the stomach; he was attended to on the scene and transported to eMalahleni Private Hospital.

It is alleged that the three men went to Van Deventer Street because one of them lives there and they were on their way to drop him off.

A friend of the deceased confirmed that his body would be taken back to Algeria for the funeral.

The body was taken to OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday, October 29.

“He was a good guy and a hard worker, he will be missed,” his friend concluded.

A case of murder has been opened and police are investigating.

No arrests were made before the time of going to print.
