VIDEO- All is calm in eMalahleni today

These arrests followed after police received information which they followed up on, and found suspects damaging property

What transpired in the CBD (Central Business District) yesterday is calm now and no one died during the commotion.

“What started as a small group entering the CBD yesterday on Wednesday, September 11, evolved into something much larger. A small group of people started looting shops in the CBD and local criminal elements made it ‘bigger’. This was not a planned xenophobic attack, but police did make seven arrests,” confirmed Capt Eddie Hall, media spokesperson for the Witbank Police.

These arrests followed after police received information which they followed up on, and found suspects damaging property.

They also had stolen goods in their possession.

He added that General Wilson Kekana and Brig Lindani Ndlovu had a meeting and set out their plan of action going forward.

“All the role players were present in the meeting, like law enforcement, the traffic department and more in order to prevent further attacks. We are currently continuously patrolling the CBD to keep a close eye on the situation.”

Capt Hall said that the suspects arrested will be charged with malicious damage to property and possession of suspected stolen goods.

“The message that we want to send out is that all role players are notified and the safety of everyone is of utmost importance. Shop owners were given emergency numbers to contact and know where to go for help in a dangerous situation. We do expect to make more arrests as the investigation is still ongoing.”

Capt Hall confirmed that everything is quiet and under control in the CBD today.
