Department of Education took over after HGH dispute

The governing body gave the investigation over to the Mpumalanga Department of Education and their update on the incident.

After rumours of the incident that occurred at Hoërskool Generaal Hertzog spread like a ‘veldfire’ last week, the governing body of HGH send out a media release to state their side of the story after a fight was recorded and went viral on social media.

“Hoërskool Generaal Hertzog is deeply disappointed in the disturbance of the past few days. The incident of the fight on Wednesday, July 31 between the boys was addressed immediately. The other parties involved were identified the next day, Thursday, August 1 and dealt with. The school however did not get the opportunity to follow the necessary disciplinary procedures. Learners who, without having the relevant facts, had posted the incident on social media. None of the parties involved had been suspended at that stage, but the incorrect message was posted. It was alleged that some learners were expelled while others did not receive any punishment,” the media release stated.

The governing body gave the investigation over to the Mpumalanga Department of Education and their update on the incident.

“MEC for Education, Mr Bonakele Majuba condemned the fighting that took place between some black and white learners at Hoërskool Generaal Hertzog. Of great concern to the MEC is the allegation that subsequently the school only suspended the black learners following this incident. To this effect, MEC Majuba directed that all suspended learners return to the school to learn and that the principal ensure that classes progresses without any disruption. The MEC further instructed the Department to institute an investigation into the matter urgently. The Department will monitor the situation at this school very closely”, spokesman of the Department of Education, Mr Jasper Zwane concluded.
