Ms Sonto Nkosi surging forward with Phidisa

Her non-governmental organisation Phidisa was started in 2000 and was registered in 2006; she has never looked back since then

She is gentle, has energy and passion for her work.

Her non-governmental organisation Phidisa was started in 2000 and was registered in 2006; she has never looked back since then.

Her aim was to have home based care together with a group of dedicated workers to have prevention and youth development programmes as well as HIV testing and counselling and to advocate for gender based violence.

Ms Nkosi thought they have cultivated enough ground even though a lot still needs to be done.

“In Phidisa we have a team of dedicated workers who strive to be the best. Three of the volunteers have graduated to be nurses while others are in different fields. They later develop a love for helping other people and one can see that they are doing it with love. They are doing their work with passion, not for money. We wish we can have many volunteers but financial constrains prevented that,” stated Ms Nkosi.

Ms Nkosi now has opened branches at Gert Sibande district as well as Nkangala.

She was the initiator of the Emalahleni Home Based Care Forum so that all the groups must speak with one voice.

She is the chairperson of the Civil Society representing 18 sectors including the elderly, youth and other groups.

She is the assistant to the executive mayor in the Local Aids Council.

“Our aim is to reach as many as possible people in our province. We have noticed that people still need information and churches and civil society groupings have a role to play. We need to join hands together and fight ‘our battles’ together as a nation. We must all aim to make a difference in people’s lives,” concluded Ms Nkosi.
