There are still no leads following the death of businesswoman Helen Fanourakis.

Fanourakis was shot dead on Sunday, March 31, during a hijacking.

On Sunday, May 5 her family held a 40 day commemoration at the Greek Orthodox Church in Germiston.

Although vehicle theft remains very high, it is the hijacking trend that remains most worrying to motorists.

On Friday, May 3 Mr Patrick Mongatane prayed non-stop while he was kept tied up in the back of his bakkie after two men hijacked him.
Mongatane said he was getting nervous when he realised he was being followed.

He was forced to stop when the vehicle following him, overtook and blocked him.

“Two armed men got out of their vehicle and pointed a gun at me,” Mongatane said.

The hijackers tied Mongatane up, put a plastic bag over his face and ordered him into the back of his bakkie.

“They drove around with me in the back and at a stage I could feel we were travelling on a dirt road.”

The hIjackers stopped and started searching for the bakkie’s tracking device.

After Mongatane told them there was no tracking device, they left him on the road between Verena and eMalahleni.

Mongatane untied himself and got help from a local tavern.

“It could have been so different. The hijackers could have shot me. I just kept on praying. God heard my prayers and today I am safe. A bit traumatised, but I am alive.”

What the hijackers did not realize is that there was a tracking device in the bakkie and Mongatane’s bakkie was found in Benoni.

The police are urging you to come forward if you have any information about hijacking syndicates or the hijacking wherein Fanourakis was killed.
