Open day for all at Impungwe Hospital

Impungwe is a level 1 district hospital with 100 approved beds and 40 usable

The open day at Impungwe Hospital was a huge success as well as very educational.

On Friday, April 5 an educational talk was given about the hospital and what it offers.

Impungwe is a level 1 district hospital with 100 approved beds and 40 usable.

This hospital was donated to the Department of Health by Ingwe Coal Corporation, officially opened on October 30 1998 – ‘to serve the community’.

The name Impungwe is the combination of Ingwe and Mpumalanga and is situated approximately 15 kilometres west of eMalahleni on the Bethal-road.

The services rendered at this hospital include outpatient, casualty and ambulatory services, medical-, surgical- (no theatre) and paediatric in-patient care.

Letlalo Malisela (Chief Executive Officer of Impungwe Hospital) and Nomthi Vilane (Corporate Manager of Impungwe Hospital).

It offers comprehensive care, management and treatment of HIV/AIDS, STI and TB as well as obstetric and gynae services (not specialised).

Family health care is available, as well as radiology, dental services, physiotherapy, social workers of psychologists, occupational therapy and dietetics.

Some outreach services include medical social work, dietetics, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychology, dental and medical services.

There are numerous morbidity and mortality treatments offered, which include (among others) retro-viral diseases, pulmonary TB, diabetic mellitus as well as meningitis and chronic cardiac failures.

The future plans for the hospital include the development into a district hospital for the Emalahleni Local Municipality, a new tertiary hospital to replace Witbank Hospital and the construction of a mental health hospital in the local municipality for the Nkangala District.
