Another shot dead in suspected hijacking

The bakkie was recovered 33km away, close to Kromdraai

Police are warning motorists to be on high alert following a spike in hijacking across the city.

The latest police reports show that three more hijackings were reported this past weekend following the fatal shooting of local businesswoman Mrs Helen Fanourakis on Sunday, March 31.

Her vehicle was hijacked in front of the security complex in Estelle Street where she lived with her two sons.

In the latest cases Ms Lucia Skhosana fell victim to hijackers moments after she stopped at her gate in Springbok Park after an evening church function on April 3 at 22:10.

“I was overwhelmed with fear when two men approached me as I got out the car to open the gate. They were driving a BMW,” she said.

Skhosana said one of the men pointed a gun at her and took her car keys.

“My life is not worth the vehicle. When they drove off in my car I realised I was alive. I could easily have been shot,” Skhosana said.

Exactly 24 hours later a security supervisor was stripped off his uniform and his Chevrolet utility bakkie hijacked when he did his hourly rounds.

Mr Tresor Luanga did an hourly inspection at a car dealership on April 4 at 22:10 and spoke to the security guard on duty there for a few moments.

“I just climbed in the bakkie when suddenly I heard a gunshot and saw two men walking my way. At first I thought they shot the security guard, because he was crying, crouched up in a bundle. Luckily he was not shot. They pointed a firearm at me, searched me and took my cell phone and cash in the bakkie.”

Luanga was told to strip off his uniform which the suspects took with them.

The bakkie was recovered 33km away, close to Kromdraai.

The suspects tried to torch the bakkie.

The flames were distinguished by the vehicle recovery company.

On the same night just 1.7km away a man was shot dead and another seriously injured.

According to Sgt Khomotso Maluleke, spokesperson of Vosman Police Station two security guards were shot while they were doing rounds in the Wakefield area.

This incident happened at around 22:30.

“One guard was shot in the back of his head and he also sustained two gunshots to the right side of his body. The second guard was shot in his right arm. He was taken to a local hospital,” Sgt Maluleke said.

Seven empty cartridges and one live cartridge were found on the scene.

The suspects drove into concrete palisades in an attempt to flee the scene.

They abandoned the bakkie.

There is not much information available about this incident as the investigating officer is yet to conclude his investigation.

The guard who was shot was identified at 37-year old Samson Thokozane malaza.

His sister, Ms Nurse Malaza said this came as a huge shock to their family.

“Samson was very close to our mother. When he was not at work in eMalahleni he would always go home to our mother in Nhlazatshe.”

She said her brother was a quiet person who loved his family and friends dearly.

“My brother was not married and had no children of his own. He was especially close to his niece and nephews.”

The family is busy with funeral arrangements.

There is no information about the guard that was injured.

The security company the two security guards were working for did not respond to an enquiry by the time going to print.

“We are looking for suspects and any information from the community leading to the arrests will be highly appreciated. You can phone 0800 100111 if you have any information,” Sgt Maluleke said.
