VIDEO: Illegal mining in Ogies raises eyebrows

This illegal mining activity was taking place at Wilge Mine in the Ogies district

Illegal mining became a much-talked about topic recently following the disaster at Optimum Mine where 22 people lost their lives.

On Wednesday, March 19 an illegal mining operation was detected on what is believed to be one of the Sereti owned mines.

This illegal mining activity was taking place at Wilge Mine in the Ogies district.

According to police spokesperson Const Thabang Mabena eight miners were initially apprehended but warning statements of only five were taken.

They were not arrested. The matter is referred to Witbank Magistrate’s Court for decision.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brig Leonard Hlathi slashed out and said people buying coal from such illegal mining operations are just as guilty.

By the time going to print there was no response from Sereti Mining Company.
