Klipfontein Checkers’ road will soon be fixed

The municipality’s permission for the property group to carry out this work has come with some conditions

The potholes at Checkers Hyper in Klipfontein will soon be fixed.

“After a lengthily battle with the Emalahleni Local Municipality, which included litigation, we can now confirm that the municipal manager has granted us permission to repair the roads, albeit at our own cost. This was not possible in the past as the carrying out of any work on municipal property by a private body is not legal,” said Mr Matthew Osterloh from Witbank Highveld Investment (Pty) Ltd.

The municipality’s permission for the property group to carry out this work has come with some conditions such as them having to also address drainage (which led to the dilapidation of the road), that they follow their specifications for roads, and that they make use of their service providers.

“We are currently awaiting quotations from the municipality’s service providers, where after we will have to submit drawings for approval by the municipality’s technical services department,” Osterloh said.

They expect the process to take six to eight weeks before the actual work on the potholes and drainage systems will kick-off.

“It is a win-win situation for everyone including customers who use the mall for shopping. As far as we are concerned the land does not belong to the municipality, and as such, it is the sole responsibility of the management to seal those potholes for the sake of motorists who frequent the mall. We are pleased that finally they have seen the importance of repairing the road infrastructure inside the mall,” municipal spokesperson Mr Kingdom Mabuza said.
