Contractors as well as mineworkers were asked to leave several mines

Mineworkers from Glencore Mine is on edge after been vacated from mines in the area earlier this week.

Contractors as well as mineworkers were asked to leave several mines in the Emalahleni mining area on February 19.

WITBANK NEWS was told that a group of people want to mine the mine dumps Glencore plans to rehabilitate soon.

This however could not be confirmed.

On Wednesday, February 20 busloads of people were again seen transported to Glencore Mines to again disrupt services.

Administration workers on one of the mines were forcefully removed from their offices.

It is with great concern that Glencore, the company, confirms that an illegal community protest took place at our Glencore Operations South Africa operations on Tuesday, 19 February 2019.

“The company strongly condemns this illegal behaviour of forced invasion, intimidation of employees and theft of property. The company confirms that employees had to be evacuated from the mines as a safety measure and there are no reports of any injuries or harm to employees,” said Glencore spokesperson Shivani Chetram.

The company’s management team is engaging with other mining companies, government, safety and security structures and various stakeholders in an effort to end the protests.
