The accident that happened on Saturday, December 15 at approximately 17:45 in Mandela Road just past the stop street at the entrance to Del Judor 4 had tongues wagging as it is rumoured that one of the occupants of the vehicle was Mr Andile Ramaphosa.


Members from SACCW EMS/FD Volunteers and Emalahleni Fire Department worked together to extinguish the burning car.

According to a police report, the driver of the silver Mercedes Benz C63 AMG that burned out on the scene, Mr Lucky George, said he was driving with two passengers inside his vehicle after they left a wedding venue in the city.

According to George he was driving towards Highveld Mall and stopped at a traffic light where a white Volkswagen Golf was also waiting to go. Suddenly the passenger from the Golf climbed out of the vehicle and he was armed with a firearm.

George alleged that he then drove off at high speed when he lost control of the vehicle, hit the pavement and overturned into the field where it caught alight.

Luckily the driver and the two passengers managed to get out of the vehicle. They sustained burn wounds.

SACCW EMS/FD volunteers and Emalahleni Fire Department arrived on scene and extinguished the fire.

Emergency services attended the scene and George was transported to Life Cosmos Hospital by Langamed Emergency Management.

He sustained burn wounds to his forehead, back and neck. He also had lacerations on his chin.

Ms Sindiswa Mohata (26) was treated by JD-Med on scene; she was taken to Witbank Provincial Hospital where she was later transferred to eMalahleni Private Hospital. She sustained severe burn wounds to the lower part of her body.

“The patient was transferred to a burns unit in a stable condition,” said Ms Valerie Shanahan, Hospital Manager.

The man believed to be Ramaphosa was taken to Life Cosmos Hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

A woman who was at the hospital at the same time said:

“I was not sure who he was but he was very friendly and even let me get helped first.”


The embankment where the car hit before it rolled into the nearby field where it set alight.

Shortly after it happened; while she was watching a video of the accident on social media, he watched it as well and said to the woman,

“Is it already in the media, as I am one of the survivors?”

In the police accident report one of the passengers was only referred to as “A”.

Ms Khusela Diko, the new spokesperson for President Cyril Ramaphosa was contacted several times without success to confirm if it was indeed Andile involved in the accident.
