Camera-clown caught sticky handed

eMalahleni’s 'beloved' speeding cameras have been the source of endless amounts of frustration and upset.

eMalahleni’s ‘beloved’ speeding cameras have been the source of endless amounts of frustration and upset.

On November 9 WITBANK NEWS reported on an incident during which a taxi driver had attempted to disturb the functioning of speeding cameras by placing a black plastic bag over one of the cameras; but this black-bag-outlaw wasn’t the only individual who wanted to relieve eMalahleni’s citizens of the burdensome speeding fines being handed out by the traffic department.

Recently a man from eMalahleni was allegedly caught tampering with the speeding cameras.

New speeding cameras in eMalahleni – friend or foe?

“The man was spotted placing stickers on the speed camera by the camera’s operator,” stated municipal spokesperson, Kingdom Mabuza, “The camera operator immediately alerted law enforcement officers and within ten minutes they were on the scene. Law enforcement apprehended the man. He was then taken to Witbank Police Station and was charged with defeating the ends of justice. We would like to caution people who are considering tampering with the speeding cameras that they will be arrested and charged. The speed cameras are not meant to push motorists or to make money, but they are there to force motorists to slow down and keep to the speed limit. The safety of motorists and pedestrians are a priority to the municipality.”

The accused’s attorney declined the opportunity to comment on the matter, but confirmed that the matter would be heard mid-next year.

WITBANK NEWS will provide updates as the matter progresses, and throughout the trial.
