A filling station in Voortrekker Street was the unfortunate victim of an ATM-bombing early on Black Friday morning, November 23.

According to police, the employees were inside the shop busy cleaning when an unknown amount of armed men stormed in through the locked door.

The employees were instructed to lie down on the floor, they reportedly heard three loud noises and when they looked up they saw the one ATM inside the shop and the drop safe was bombed. The suspects fled shortly thereafter.

A customer was outside the shop when the incident happened, driving a Volkswagen Polo TSI.

The suspects took the vehicle of the customer with registration number JSB 365 MP.

The victims reported to police that all the suspects wore balaclavas and an undisclosed amount of money was stolen.

The suspects allegedly fled direction Verena, but the stolen vehicle was recovered shortly after the incident in Thusanang.

The communications department of the filling station was contacted and confirmed above information, and added:

“We cannot disclose any more information at this stage as the investigation is still ongoing. Most importantly none of the site employees were injured and all site employees will receive trauma counseling as required,” said a member from media enquiries.
