Alleged revenge killing at Kusile leaves man dead

This incident took place on Tuesday, November 13 in what seemed to be a shooting of revenge.

It was reported on www.witbanknews.co.za that the men were arrested on charges of murder, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm. They briefly appeared in the Ogies Magistrate’s Court on November 15 for the first time and the case was postponed to November 21 for their formal bail hearing.

Following the shooting, police instituted a 72-hour activation plan where relevant resources were deployed and the members followed all possible leads which led to the arrest of the two men.

The firearm was found in one of the suspects’ possession along with 13 firearm cartridges were found on the crime scene.

In a statement, police said that the deceased victim had seven bullet wounds after police found him, and both victims were employed as contractors, working at Kusile Power Station.

The suspects (aged 23 and 31 respectively) said that they shot the man after the victims allegedly hurt one of their family members.

The arrest was made by members from Phola Police Station, Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Nape Philemon Matlala and Acting Vispol Commander, Warrant Officer Fana Lucas Maphosa.

In a national statement, the Provincial Commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma condemns the act of people taking the law into their own hands.

He urges communities to work with the police at all times.

Kusile Power Station said that the shooting did not happen on the Kusile grounds nor was the incident work related. Therefore, there were no incident report from Kusile’s side, and the communications officer said that the matter remains with the police for further investigation.

“Kusile Power Station Project Management regrets to inform you of an unfortunate incident that took place at approximately 11h00 today (November 13). One of our Contractor employees during his lunch break at the North t-junction (D686) was fatally shot by two unknown suspects. The SAPS has apprehended the two suspects and they are in custody. The incident is currently under investigation. Management hereby expresses their sincere condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased employee,” read a press release from Kusile.

The family of the deceased could not be reached by time of going to print.
