The R554, leading to Kriel, became the scene of immense tragedy after an eMalahleni man lost his close friend whilst they were walking back home.
On November 10 at approximately 04:20 in the morning, the two men were walking along the stretch of secondary road where the accident occurred.
The first man was walking slightly ahead of his friend when suddenly he heard a loud crunch behind him and saw a car speeding passed.
His close friend had been hit by a reckless driver, who had immediately fled the scene.

The man was unable to make out the colour of the car or its registration number due to how quickly the events unfolded and because of the darkness that enfolds eMalahleni at that time in the morning.
The car that hit his friend was traveling from eMalahleni in the direction of Kriel.
The man’s friend was declared dead at the scene, leaving the police with very few leads in this case.
