For years the public tried to get the municipality to take action and make the stretch of road safer.

Some suggested traffic lights; others stop streets and speed humps.

But because OR Tambo Street is a primary road leading out of eMalahleni, many of these ideas can not be implemented. Taking the bends into consideration, traffic lights and strop streets would create more accidents.

However the municipality did put up rubble strips two years ago warning motorists that there is a dangerous bend ahead.

Now they are regularly putting down the mobile speed cameras keeping motorists at bay.


Democratic Alliance ward councillor Ms Marianne Venter points to the 70km/h sign in OR Tambo Street.

“It is important to know that the speed limit on OR Tambo Street is 70km/h,” said Democratic Alliance ward councillor, Ms Marianne Venter.

Motorists can be seen driving much slower after fine infringements were issued for speeding this past few weeks.
