Family of four die in accident on Old Ogies Road

Before the sun rose to introduce the new day, a horrific accident claimed four lives, all from the same family – a father, mother and two children.

Early Saturday morning, on August 4 around 05:00 a head on collision occurred on the old Ogies road between a Nissan 1400 and a Volkswagen Polo.

A bystander who arrived shortly after the accident took place, dispatched ambulance services to the scene.

“It is not clear what caused the accident but it seems like one of the vehicles missed the turn, and that caused the collision,” said a bystander.

“I stopped at the scene and went to the Polo. The driver looked okay so I went to the Nissan where I saw two kids crawling out of the vehicle. I told them to lie on the ground and be still. I covered them with a blanket I found and told them to be still until an ambulance arrived.”

All of the patients were treated on scene and police stated that the driver and two occupants in the Nissan were declared dead on scene.
On Saturday, Ms Estie Biela, paramedic from ER24 said that the other patients were transported to hospital with serious injuries.

“One patient died in hospital, who suffered from internal and head injuries. One of the children sustained light head injuries while another child sustained serious head injuries. Another passenger sustained a fracture.”

It is said that they were on their way to a family gathering and all the passengers from the 1400 were from one family.

The deceased were identified as Joseph Marutla Balaya (50), Christina Balaya (15), Rifilwe Balaya (13) and Mary Thule Mthombeni (49).
