Six individuals were arrested for the possession and/or usage of a dependence producing substance last week.
These illegal substances allegedly vary from marijuana to heroine – with 80% of the arrestees over these specific days being persons younger than 30-years of age.
Four of the six aforementioned suspects were arrested and charged with the possession and use of marijuana.
On June 28, a 22-year old man was arrested for the possession of an illegal substance after the police searched him under reasonable suspicion during a routine patrol. Other notable arrests on this day were the arrests of a man in Opperman Street for the possession of marijuana and that of a young man and woman for the possession of marijuana during separate incidents.

On June 27, two 27-year old men were arrested on unrelated drug charges – one for the possession of marijuana and the other for the possession of an unspecified illegal substance.
A large portion of these drugs were uncovered during routine operations, such as the infamous “stop-and-search”, during which members of the South African Police Service stumbled upon the narcotics.
As decreed by the Criminal Procedure Act, the police are allowed to search a person or vehicle without a warrant or further legal authority if there is reasonable suspicion that either is concealing contraband.
Under the Drugs and Drugs Trafficking Act, those found guilty of possessing any dangerous dependence-producing substances or any undesirable dependence-producing substance, face up to 15 years’ imprisonment – along with the threat of hefty fines and a conviction under this offence on their criminal record.
