Another accident on the feared R555

The old Middelburg road (R555) is a road feared by many and with good reason.

Not only has this road claimed the lives of many but it has also seen some of the worst accidents in eMalahleni.

The silver Nissan sedan that was involved in the accident.

On Saturday, June 9, another accident took place on the R555 just about 300m past the Jackaroo stop. A silver Nissan sedan and a Nissan NP200 collided on their way towards Middelburg.

Allegedly the Nissan sedan overtook just in front of a turn in the road and couldn’t see if there was any oncoming traffic. A car came from the front and in an attempt to miss the oncoming vehicle, the sedan collided with the Nissan NP200.

“All that we know is that one of the vehicles tried to overtake and that caused the accident,” explained one of the bystanders that was on the scene.

“The driver of the silver car tried to overtake my uncle in the NP200, unfortunately the gap was not big enough before a car came from the front and in an attempt to swing out of the way, the silver car collided with my uncle’s vehicle,” said a close family member of the driver in the NP200.

The vehicles had to be removed from the road before the police arrived on scene as it was causing a big pile up which could lead to more accidents. All members involved in the accident were taken to hospital and fortunately there wasn’t any serious injuries.
