Mystery fire burns a nine room house

The fire started in the main bedroom of the nine bedroom house on Saturday, April 28 at about 20:00 while he was watching television.


The house belonging to Mr Evans Mbuli in KwaGuqa Extension 5 was destroyed by fire.


The inside of the house was also destroyed by the fire. Only a shell remains.

“I smelled some smoke and came out of the house to check where the smell came from and I saw nothing. On coming back neighbours alerted me and showed me that fire was in fact inside my own house. I saw the smoke coming out of the roof and the fire was spreading very fast.”

Mr Mbuli said neighbours came to his rescue putting out the fire, but the fire was very strong and it was spreading very fast to the other rooms. He said they tried using a hose pipe to extinguish the fire, but to no avail. He indicated that three bedrooms, plus the kitchen and the bathroom were totally destroyed. Mbuli said furniture and clothes were all destroyed during the fire.

Neighbours asked about his car which was in the garage and they had to break the door since the remote control was no longer working to take out the car.

Fire engines came but they were too late to save anything. Only a few items were saved by the neighbours. Municipality officials came to inspect the cables and found that everything was in order.


The main switch which was found to be in order and yet the fire destroyed the house.


Debris taken out of Mr Evans Mbuli’s house in KwaGuqa Extension 5 which was destroyed by fire.

“It is still a mystery how the fire started and a coincidence that after splitting from my spouse, after only a month, that a fire could destroy my house. At my age I have to start all over again to rebuild the house which is a huge mountain to climb. I only read about such stories but now I can believe them after I have experienced it myself,” added Mr Mbuli.

The damaged to the house is estimated to run into millions of Rands.
