Three men were arrested for illegally processing gold.

The trio was denied bail on Friday, March 9 and the case was postponed to March 16 for verification of addresses and further investigation.


Gold bearing material estimated to be worth R400 000 was found on a farm near Ogies.

They were arrested by members of Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit Middelburg, Secunda and South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB) on Thursday March 8 during an operation conducted at a farm in the Ogies area.

“The men were found at the farm working and they alleged that they were employed by another man. The man was phoned and upon arrival at the farm he tried to bribe the police with R6 000 and he was immediately arrested,” said Hawks spokesperson Cpt Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi.

Following a search at the farm, gold bearing material estimated to be worth R400 000 and a vehicle were seized.
