The Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport has not started fixing the R547 yet.

This is what the R547’s road surface looks like.

This road is deteriorating fast due to heavy vehicles transporting coal from various mines in the vicinity. For motorists this is a nightmare because of the potholes.

Mr Paul Roux, who uses the road on a daily basis, raised concerns about the condition of the road on several occasions.

Drivers are driving on the shoulder of the road to avoid potholes.

“The department is aware of the condition of the road. Potholes on a road are usually an indication of structural damage on the road, and the real intervention is total rehabilitation (reconstruction) of the road. In the short to medium term, the department has appointed a contractor to patch the potholes to mitigate motorists’ inconvenience. Some sections of the road will also be resealed as part of the intervention,” said Mr Mpho Gabashane from the department
