A contracting company that was asked by the municipality to install the Smart Meters faced a tragedy as one of the workers sustained serious burn wounds after an explosion.

On Thursday December 14, South African Community Crime Watch (SACCW) responded to a call about an electrical power box that exploded in Model Park. Mr Gregory Bezuidenhout requested back up at the scene as it came through that a worker was badly burned.

The technician, Mr Siyabulela Mavimbela that was on site sustained 9% burn wounds to his face and hands and needed urgent medical attention. Langamed Ambulance Services were dispatched to the scene and treated the burn victim before rushing him to ePH Private Hospital. Shortly thereafter, Witbank Fire Department arrived and extinguished the fire.

According to further reports, it is alleged that there were a total of three explosions the same day around eMalahleni.

Residents are prone to more suffering as sabotage is fingered as the key element that has contributed to the electrical outages in Emalahleni. Kingdom Mabuza, spokesperson for the Emalahleni Local Municipality states that,

“Vandalism inside Market Substation is sabotage according to the Emalahleni Local Municipality.”

This resulted in R10 million worth of damage when “thieves” stole cables and copper bars.
