Motorists started their week on a sour note when more than five cars got involved in an accident, leaving one dead.

The accident happened on Monday morning, December 11 on the N4 highway at Olifantsriver Bridge between Mandela Drive and the Middelburg Plaza.

Due to the accident both lanes were affected leading to them being closed. Motorists used the R555, old Middelburg Road as the alternative route.

Legacy Emergency Specialists was one of the emergency teams on scene and the ambulance service transported five patients to hospital.

Trac N4 team, through their tweets, provided regular updates on the accident which was apparently caused by heavy rain. The team advised motorists to switch headlights on, do not speed and keep a safe following distance as heavy rain was experienced on some parts of the N4.

Motorists were urged to be patient with the clean up proceedings and the highway was opened a couple of hours later. At the time of going to print, the deceased was not identified and 10 vehicles were reported to have been involved in the accident.

On Saturday evening, December 9 police attended a culpable homicide case on the Bethal Road. A man was killed by a motor vehicle and there were no particulars of the victim found on scene.
