Witbank police cracked another quick cash scam this past week.

A resident of eMalahleni can be thankful for the Shift A team of the SAPS Witbank that saved him R90 000. The scam, known as the magic wallet, surfaced in town on October 26.

The complainant alleged that his daughter got the ritual healers number via a friend telling her how to make easy cash. The complainant unfortunately fell for this hoax and did what the so called ritual healers instructed him to do. This instruction was to buy a brand new suitcase with two blankets, put in an unknown amount of cash and meet up with them in a nearby bush in the CBD (Central Business District).

After doing what the victim was told the scammers then gave him ‘muti’ and did some rituals in the bushes. When they had finished up the scammers then gave the victim back the suitcase he earlier bought, but this time the suitcase was heavy and cash stuck out of the bag.

The two suspects allegedly said that he must only open the suitcase at home. On his arrival home he opened the bag just to find a pillow filled with maize meal and no cash in sight besides the R100 note that suck out.

The victim immediately went to the police where they made a quick response and arrested the scammers.

Warrant Officer Mamarege urged that the community should be alert to the dangers of having their money seized by so called “traditional healers” promising them that their money will multiply exponentially.

“There is no existent magic that could multiply your money by putting it in a bag, or any other case for that matter. People lost their pension money (millions), sold their houses and gave it to these scum-bags,” she concluded.
